Oor Ain Folk: Robert William Inglis (1843-1923)

Lt. Col. R. W. Inglis, V.D The following article contains an extract from Oor Ain Folk by James Inglis regarding his brother Lt. Col. Sir Robert William Inglis V.D. (to give him his full title).

Robert, it could be argued, was the most successful of the children of the Reverend Robert Inglis. That is, if you measure success in titles and money. He donated quite a lot and especially buildings. He had The Inglis Memorial Hall in Edzell built in 1898 to honour his . . . → Read More: Oor Ain Folk: Robert William Inglis (1843-1923)

William Burnet Inglis 1851 – 1888

William was one of James Inglis‘ younger brothers, I have written about him before I think. He was tempted to Australia by James and took a position in a bank in Wilcannia (a town in New South Wales about 450 miles North West of Sydney) taking with him his wife and four young children Helen, Mary, Robert and William.

Information overload: more posts to follow on Hendersons and on Inglis

John and I are now Australia-based, so a few weeks were lost there, but now we’re up and running.

The (certified copy of the) marriage certificate for William Bird and Priscilla Coucher’s marriage, on June 2nd 1856 in St Pancras, lists the groom’s father as one Gervase Bird, Tailor.

Not what I was expecting, and it flatly contradicts 90% of the trees out there on the internet for the supposed genealogy of William (Some have him as son of George, taken from information on the IGI and assumed to be correct. It isn’t: that William Bird died one year later, see previous posts.).

Investigation shows that there have been just two Gervase Birds on record since 1837. . . . → Read More: William Bird, son of Gervase Bird

Minter / Ottaway link – help needed!

I was kindly pointed in the direction of a website (www.theminters.co.uk) recently, which is exceptionally well researched and nicely presented, and details virtually all Minters from the Kent area from the 1600′s onwards.

Whilst browsing the data and noting discrepancies and matches with my own research, I came across a bit of information (about Mary Minter, a daughter of Edward Burden Minter and Jane Singleton) that stunned me:

“Mary Ann Minter was born before 26 Jan 1834 in Margate, Kent and was baptised on 26 Jan 1834 in St John Thanet, Kent.

1841 census: age unclear (looks like 4 and . . . → Read More: Minter / Ottaway link – help needed!
