William Bird, son of Gervase Bird

Yes, Gervase.

The (certified copy of the) marriage certificate for William Bird and Priscilla Coucher’s marriage, on June 2nd 1856 in St Pancras, lists the groom’s father as one Gervase Bird, Tailor.

Not what I was expecting, and it flatly contradicts 90% of the trees out there on the internet for the supposed genealogy of William (Some have him as son of George, taken from information on the IGI and assumed to be correct. It isn’t: that William Bird died one year later, see previous posts.).

Investigation shows that there have been just two Gervase Birds on record since 1837. . . . → Read More: William Bird, son of Gervase Bird

Minter / Ottaway link – help needed!

I was kindly pointed in the direction of a website (www.theminters.co.uk) recently, which is exceptionally well researched and nicely presented, and details virtually all Minters from the Kent area from the 1600′s onwards.

Whilst browsing the data and noting discrepancies and matches with my own research, I came across a bit of information (about Mary Minter, a daughter of Edward Burden Minter and Jane Singleton) that stunned me:

“Mary Ann Minter was born before 26 Jan 1834 in Margate, Kent and was baptised on 26 Jan 1834 in St John Thanet, Kent.

1841 census: age unclear (looks like 4 and . . . → Read More: Minter / Ottaway link – help needed!

My husband and I write this blog because we want to remember what we did, where we went, and who we spoke to, to get our family tree(s) in order.

From trawling such sites as rootsweb, genforum, ancestryaid etc, I know that there are a lot of people out there interested in genealogy and desperate to gather information on ancestors. So far we haven’t put a full tree on the site (come on John!) but we know that this blog is getting hits and being read by people possibly descended from the very people we are writing about. General Update

I’m aware that posting has fallen away recently – this is due to being away for about a week and then various (living!) family commitments coming up. However, John and I are still both plugging away at the layers.

There comes a point where internet research alone is not enough to uncover the truth. I suspect that this is where many people give up. It’s around the point where the free BMDs run out – in England and Wales this means that anyone born before 1837 is hard to find parentage for unless they appear on the 1841 / 1851 . . . → Read More: General Update

David Lyon the Naughty Boy

David Lyon, born 1818 in Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland to Joseph Lyon, a Glasgow-born weaver, and Mary Thomson. He was seventh of their eight children (at least as far as my research can confirm). He’s my g-g-grandfather through my mother’s mother’s father’s side.

Went looking for him in the 1841 census today to try to consolidate all the information I have on him. I already have him in 1851, 1861 and 1871. He would have been about 23 at the time but, with rounding, should be 20. I found two different David Lyon’s at that age. One was a student, the . . . → Read More: David Lyon the Naughty Boy
